Motown Museum

Hitsville USA, the small house where Motown was born

Address 2648 W Grand Blvd, Detroit, MI 48208

Hitsville USA is the unassuming house where Berry Gordy founded Motown Records in 1959 and where almost every classic Motown hit was recorded between then and 1972. The tour walks visitors through Gordy's apartment upstairs, Studio A in the back, and an exhibition of stage costumes, gold records, and instruments. The Studio A piano — the one heard on "My Girl," "Heat Wave," and "What's Going On" — was restored after Paul McCartney visited and pointed out its sorry state.

Tours run multiple times a day and routinely sell out. Book in advance online. The museum is expanding with a new building next door, but the original house remains the heart of the visit.

A story
Berry Gordy bought the modest two-storey house at 2648 West Grand Boulevard in 1959 for $23,000, moved his family into the upstairs apartment, and turned the back garage into Studio A. The Funk Brothers cut more number-one records there in seven years than the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and Elvis combined.
