Hart Plaza is the 14-acre concrete plaza on the Detroit River at the foot of Woodward Avenue, designed by Isamu Noguchi and Shoji Sadao and finished in 1979. The space hosts most of the city's big outdoor events: the Detroit Jazz Festival, Movement (the electronic music festival in May), the Mexican-influenced Cinco de Mayo celebration, and the Ford Fireworks over the river in late June.
Noguchi's stainless-steel Pylon — a twisted 120-foot sculpture in the south end — is the visual anchor. The Horace E. Dodge Fountain, also Noguchi's, anchors the centre. Outside event days the plaza is open and quiet, with sweeping views across the river to Windsor.
