Meadow Brook Hall is the fourth-largest historic house museum in the United States: a 110-room Tudor Revival mansion built between 1926 and 1929 for Matilda Dodge Wilson, widow of auto pioneer John Dodge. The interior is exceptionally intact — original furniture, fittings, art collection, and even some of the Dodge family's clothes. The grounds extend over 1,400 acres of what is now the Oakland University campus.
Tours run daily. The Knole Cottage on the grounds — a six-room miniature mansion built as a children's playhouse — is also open in season. Worth the half-hour drive north for serious house-museum interest.
