This Ashokan Pillar stands near the Mutiny Memorial on Delhi's northern ridge. It was originally brought from Meerut by Feroz Shah Tughlaq in the 14th century and set up in what was then a favoured hunting area.
The pillar was badly damaged in the 18th century, sent to Kolkata, and reassembled in Delhi in 1867. It is a modest-looking monument, but its route through Indian history is unusually long.
