Mughal Gardens

Roses and fountains inside the President's Estate grounds

The Mughal Gardens occupy a long terraced section of Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President's official residence. Designed by Edwin Lutyens in collaboration with the Mughal garden tradition, the layout uses formal water channels, rose beds, and fountains arranged along a central axis. The gardens are open to the public for a few weeks each February during "Udyanotsav" — outside that window you can only glimpse the grounds from the gates.

The rose collection is the main draw: over 100 varieties planted in geometric beds, including some named after former presidents. There are also lily ponds, a herb garden section, and a bonsai garden near the southern end. Come early on a weekday to avoid the crowds that build from mid-morning.
