The Hauz Khas Complex is a medieval reservoir, madrasa, and tomb complex perched at the edge of a large urban lake in South Delhi. The 14th-century sultan Firuz Shah Tughlaq built the madrasa and his own ornate tomb here in the 1350s, surrounding the Hauz-i-Alai — a vast water tank first constructed by Alauddin Khalji. The colonnaded madrasa buildings stretch along the water's edge, now ruined but photogenic.
Today the complex is encircled by Hauz Khas Village, a gentrified neighbourhood of boutiques, restaurants, and rooftop bars. The deer park adjoining the tank is good for a morning walk. At sunset, the west-facing terrace of the Firuz Shah Tughlaq's tomb is one of the best viewpoints in Delhi, looking out over the lake and Delhi Ridge forest.
