Tank Road and the surrounding area form the shoe-manufacturing and wholesale district of Karol Bagh, where dozens of shops sell handmade and machine-stitched leather shoes, chappals, and boots at factory prices. The street has a long history as Delhi's footwear production hub and the quality of local craftsmanship is excellent, particularly for traditional North Indian designs and bespoke made-to-measure work.
Several workshops on the lanes behind the main shopping street still do traditional hand-stitching and will execute custom orders within a few days. Prices are a fraction of what you would pay in smart South Delhi boutiques for equivalent quality. The market is quieter and less touristy than comparable shopping districts.
