Jama Masjid

India's largest mosque with tower views over Old Delhi

Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in India, built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1656. The courtyard can hold 25,000 worshippers and remains an active place of prayer. Three great gates, four towers, and two 40-metre minarets frame a massive open courtyard paved in red sandstone and white marble.

The mosque sits at the heart of Old Delhi, opposite the Red Fort, surrounded by the dense streets and bazaars of Chandni Chowk. You can climb the southern minaret for a panoramic view over the city -- the rooftops of Old Delhi spread out below, with the sounds of street life drifting up from 40 metres down. It is one of the best vantage points in Delhi.

Visitors should dress modestly and remove shoes before entering. Non-Muslims are welcome outside prayer times. There is a small fee to bring a camera.
