The Lodhi Art District transformed a sleepy government residential colony into one of India's most celebrated open-air mural galleries. Launched in 2015 as part of the St+art India Foundation's citywide public art initiative, the project recruited over 50 international and Indian street artists to paint enormous murals on the walls, water tanks, and buildings of Lodhi Colony. The result is a kilometres-long outdoor gallery that can be walked or cycled at any time, free of charge.
New murals are added each year, and the styles range from hyperrealistic portraiture to geometric abstraction to politically charged illustration. Early mornings or evenings are the best times to walk the colony streets — the light is good for photography and the neighbourhood is quieter. The Lodhi Hotel at the colony's edge has curated its own collection of works on the surrounding walls.
