Tomb of Isa Khan

16th-century octagonal Sur-dynasty mausoleum in the gardens of Humayun's Tomb

The Tomb of Isa Khan is a 16th-century octagonal mausoleum located within the Humayun's Tomb complex, just inside the entrance gate. Isa Khan Niyazi was an Afghan chieftain and nobleman who served the Sur dynasty and was an adversary of Emperor Humayun. The tomb, built in 1547, predates the main Humayun's Tomb by fifteen years and is a fine example of Sur-period architecture with a surrounding garden, mosque, and stone-latticed screens.

The tomb is often overlooked by visitors rushing to the main mausoleum, but is worth a careful look for its elegant octagonal form and the decorative quality of its carving. The attached mosque retains original tilework. Entry is included with the Humayun's Tomb ticket.
