Safdarjung's Tomb Gardens

Last great garden tomb of Delhi's Mughal tradition, built in 1754 for Nawab Safdarjung

Safdarjung's Tomb is the last great garden tomb to be built in Delhi's Mughal tradition, completed in 1754 for Nawab Safdarjung, the prime minister of the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah. The white-marbled mausoleum stands at the centre of a formal Mughal charbagh (four-square garden) with sunken walkways, fountains, and rows of cypress trees. The craftsmanship is inferior to earlier Mughal tombs but the garden is beautifully maintained and far less visited than Humayun's Tomb.

The surrounding walls enclose a large, peaceful garden that is excellent for a morning or late-afternoon visit. The gate pavilions on all four sides of the garden are elaborate and worth exploring. The attached Jharna (Cascade) building behind the tomb is notable for its carved facade. Entry is ticketed at a low price; the garden is open from dawn to dusk.
