Jhandewalan Temple

Popular Hindu temple near Karol Bagh dedicated to Vaishno Devi, cut into a rocky ridge

Jhandewalan Mandir is a popular Delhi Hindu temple dedicated to Vaishno Devi, located on a rocky escarpment between Paharganj and Karol Bagh. Founded in the 19th century by Badri Bhagat, the temple is named after a large flag (jhanda) that was hoisted when a deity was discovered among the rocks. The complex has grown considerably and now includes shrines to multiple Hindu deities ranged across the hillside.

The temple attracts large crowds of devotees, particularly on Tuesdays and Sundays. An escalator installed in 2010 carries pilgrims up the rocky face to the main shrine, making it one of the first temples in India to adopt this convenience. The area around the base has good street food stalls selling puri-aloo and halwa that are popular with visitors after darshan.
