Sri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir

Oldest Jain temple in Delhi, opposite the Red Fort, with a rooftop bird hospital

The Sri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir is the oldest and most prominent Jain temple in Delhi, sitting directly opposite the Red Fort on Chandni Chowk Road. The red-sandstone complex dates from 1656, though much of the structure has been rebuilt over the centuries. Its gilded spires, painted interiors, and intricate marble carvings make it one of the most visually striking religious buildings in Old Delhi.

Behind the main temple lies a small bird hospital that has treated injured birds since 1929 — an expression of the Jain principle of ahimsa (non-violence) that has become famous in its own right. Visitors are welcome to watch the veterinary work. The temple is busiest in the early morning and at festival times; dress modestly and remove shoes at the entrance.
