Assistens Cemetery

Assistens Cemetery in Nørrebro is where Copenhagen's most famous residents are buried, including Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard. But it is not primarily a tourist attraction — it functions as a public park, used daily by locals for walking, cycling through (there are paths), and picnicking on the lawns between the graves in summer.

The combination of a functioning cemetery and a neighbourhood park is characteristically Danish: practical, unsentimental, and rather beautiful. The trees are enormous and old, the atmosphere is green and quiet, and the whole place has a lived-in quality absent from tourist cemeteries. Maps of the notable graves are available at the main entrance.

A story
Søren Kierkegaard and Hans Christian Andersen are buried about 200 metres apart in Assistens Cemetery. Kierkegaard's grave is plain and often decorated with small flowers and notes left by visitors. Andersen's has a more formal monument. Both men spent their careers in Copenhagen and were both profoundly ambivalent about the city — Andersen kept trying to leave for the salons of Europe, Kierkegaard rarely left at all.
