Frederiksstaden

Frederiksstaden is an 18th-century planned district between the city centre and the harbour — the most architecturally coherent neighbourhood in Copenhagen. It was built during the reign of Frederik V as a grand aristocratic quarter, with the octagonal Amalienborg Palace complex at its centre and the Marble Church (Frederiks Kirke) as its focal point. The streets are broad and straight, the buildings uniformly Rococo, and the district has the formal grandeur of a city built to impress.

The area is now residential and institutional — embassies, museums, and expensive apartments. Walking the grid from the harbour through Amalienborg to the Marble Church takes about 20 minutes and gives the best overview of Danish neoclassical urban planning.
