Islands Brygge Harbour Bath

Islands Brygge Harbour Bath is a series of floating pools and platforms on the south harbour, open from May to August. The water is pumped directly from the harbour — which is clean enough to swim in by any standard — and the pools include a 50-metre lane pool, a children's pool, and a diving pool with 5-metre and 8-metre platforms.

Entry is free. On a warm summer evening, thousands of people swim here — families, office workers who cycle from work, teenagers doing backflips off the diving boards. It is one of the most egalitarian and genuinely pleasant public spaces in any European city. The adjacent waterfront park has grass for sunbathing, food trucks, and occasional outdoor cinema screenings.

A story
When the city opened the first harbour bath in 2002, they invited a few thousand Copenhageners to a test swim before the official opening. Several thousand more showed up uninvited, stripped off, and jumped in the water. The authorities decided to call this a success. The harbour baths are now considered one of the symbols of the city's post-industrial transformation.
