Dedicated to the neoclassical sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844), who spent over forty years in Rome and rivaled Canova in his day. The museum holds his vast collection of sculptures and paintings, donated to Copenhagen at his death. Thorvaldsen himself is buried in the courtyard. The colourful exterior frieze depicting his triumphant return to Denmark is a sight in itself.
