Frederiksberg Gardens

Frederiksberg Gardens is the most beautiful park in Copenhagen — a designed landscape of lakes, cascading fountains, sloping lawns, and neoclassical garden buildings set around the baroque Frederiksberg Palace. It is free to enter and used daily by locals for running, picnicking, and rowing on the lakes.

The park adjoins the Copenhagen Zoo, and you can sometimes hear lions roaring from the garden. The Chinese Pavilion and the Norwegian House beside the lakes are charming garden follies. The boat rental service on the main lake is popular in summer. Frederiksberg is a separate municipality entirely surrounded by Copenhagen — something most tourists never notice — and it has a slightly more refined atmosphere than the rest of the city.

A story
Frederiksberg Gardens was originally a baroque garden laid out for Frederik IV in 1710. It was redesigned in the English landscape style in the early 19th century — one of the finest examples of the style in Scandinavia. The canal system that feeds the ponds was built by Chinese prisoners of war captured during the Great Northern War, a fact that remains largely unknown even to Danes.
