Frederiks Kirke (The Marble Church)

The Marble Church — properly Frederiks Kirke — is the domed neoclassical church that anchors the Frederiksstaden district behind Amalienborg Palace. The copper dome is one of the largest in Scandinavia, visible from across the city. Inside, the circular space under the dome is unexpectedly vast, with frescoes, marble columns, and pale light from the dome windows above.

Guided tours of the dome are available and take you up inside the structure to a gallery with views across the surrounding royal district. The exterior ring of bronze statues of Danish religious leaders and heroes on the balustrade is worth examining at close range. The church is a ten-minute walk from Nyhavn and makes a natural pairing with Amalienborg.

A story
Frederiks Kirke took 145 years to build — construction began in 1749 under Frederik V but stopped repeatedly due to cost overruns and political changes. When it finally opened in 1894, it was funded not by the Danish state but by the Danish industrialist Carl Frederik Tietgen, who bought the unfinished ruin from the government for a nominal sum and paid for its completion himself.
