Kongens Nytorv

Kongens Nytorv — The King's New Square — is Copenhagen's largest public square, at the eastern end of Strøget where it meets Nyhavn. It is a broad, handsome space dominated by the equestrian statue of Christian V and ringed by some of the most important buildings in the city: the Royal Danish Theatre, the Hotel d'Angleterre, the French Embassy, and the Academy of Fine Arts.

The square is used as a skating rink in winter and a free meeting point in summer. It is also the main metro interchange for the city centre. The contrast between the formal classical architecture around the square and the lively tourist energy of Nyhavn just behind it is one of Copenhagen's more pleasant juxtapositions.

A story
The equestrian statue of Christian V in the centre of Kongens Nytorv was erected in 1688 and is made of lead covered in gilt — the original plan was for solid bronze, but the cost was prohibitive. During student initiation at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (whose building flanks the square), first-year students were traditionally required to dance naked around the statue. The tradition has been discontinued.
