The three connected lakes — Peblinge Sø, Sortedams Sø, and Sankt Jørgens Sø — form the southern border of Nørrebro and one of Copenhagen's favourite running and walking routes. The path around all three is approximately 6 km and stays busy with cyclists, runners, and people walking dogs from early morning to late evening.
The lakes were created in the 17th century as part of the city's water supply system and later became a natural barrier between the old city walls and the expanding neighbourhoods beyond. They are now a wildlife refuge of sorts — swans, ducks, and coots nest here — as well as a social infrastructure for the surrounding neighbourhoods. The path is flat and car-free and gives good views of the water and the apartment buildings that line the shores.
