Christianshavn and Christiania

Canal-lined maritime quarter housing both 18th-century townhouses and the Freetown of Christiania

Christianshavn is the island just across the harbour from the old city centre, connected by the Knippelsbro bridge. It was built in the 17th century as a commercial and military harbour district — the grid of canals and Dutch-style brick buildings reflects that origin. Today it is a residential neighbourhood with a mix of long-time residents and newcomers, canal-side cafes, and Christiania at its southern end.

Walking the canals of Christianshavn is one of the best things to do in Copenhagen on a fine day. The Church of Our Saviour (Vor Frelsers Kirke) has a corkscrew spire you can climb for panoramic views over the city and the water. The neighbourhood has a more local, less touristy feel than the medieval city despite being just minutes away by bike.
