Statens Museum for Kunst

The Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark) is the country's largest art museum, holding a collection spanning 700 years of European and Danish art from the 14th century to the present. The original building from 1896 has been extended by a large modern wing that handles contemporary work, and the connection between old and new is handled well.

The permanent collection includes major works by Mantegna, Cranach, Rubens, Rembrandt, and the Impressionists. The Danish Golden Age section (roughly 1800–1850) is the strongest in the world for that period: Eckersberg, Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, Christen Kobke, and Martinus Rorbye are all here in depth. Entry is free for permanent collection. The museum sits adjacent to Rosenborg Castle and the King's Garden, making for a natural combined visit.

A story
The SMK's collection includes the largest surviving number of works by the Golden Age Danish painter C.W. Eckersberg — more than 30 paintings and hundreds of drawings. Eckersberg is sometimes called the father of Danish painting; he studied under David in Paris and brought a rigorous, almost photographic realism back to Denmark that transformed the country's art. The collection also includes Matisse, Picasso, and several Rubens.
