The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art occupies a stone building modelled on a Tibetan mountain temple, perched on a hillside in the Lighthouse Hill neighbourhood of Staten Island. The museum holds one of the largest collections of Tibetan and Himalayan art outside Asia, assembled by art dealer Jacqueline Klauber (who used the professional name Jacques Marchais) in the 1930s and 1940s. The small terraced gardens and fish ponds give it an unexpectedly meditative atmosphere.
