The Bronx

New York's northernmost borough, home to the Bronx Zoo, Yankee Stadium, and the Botanical Garden

The Bronx is the only one of New York's five boroughs on the mainland rather than an island, and the least visited by tourists despite holding some of the city's biggest individual attractions. The Bronx Zoo, the largest metropolitan zoo in the United States, and the adjacent New York Botanical Garden together occupy several hundred acres in the borough's centre, more green space than most cities have entirely.

Yankee Stadium, home of the New York Yankees since 2009 (the current building replaced the 1923 original across the street), anchors the South Bronx and draws crowds on game days via a direct subway line from Manhattan. The borough's reputation for urban decay in the 1970s and 80s has given way to a slower, ongoing recovery, and neighbourhoods like Belmont — Manhattan's "Little Italy" without the tourists — reward a focused visit timed around the zoo or stadium.
