Socrates Sculpture Park

Former illegal dumping site converted by artists into an open-air sculpture park on the East River

Socrates Sculpture Park is a four-acre waterfront park in Astoria that was converted from an abandoned landfill by a group of artists and community members in 1986. The park functions as an outdoor exhibition space for large-scale sculpture and installation art, with works changing regularly. The setting on the Long Island City waterfront with views of Roosevelt Island and Manhattan is unusual, and the park has a distinctly DIY character.
