1933 Slaughterhouse

Escher-like 1933 abattoir, now a creative office and event space

A genuinely strange concrete building in Hongkou, finished in 1933 as an industrial-scale slaughterhouse — for which it was equipped with a maze of cattle-ramps, twisting bridges, narrow stairs and connecting walkways arranged to move animals smoothly to the killing floor. After the abattoir closed in the 1970s, the building sat empty for thirty years before being converted in 2007 into a complex of offices, art studios and event spaces.

The interior is what to come for: the ramps, bridges and skylights make it like walking through an Escher print. Free to wander during business hours; a few cafes and shops on the lower levels.

A story
The British architect Balfours designed the building as a humane abattoir: the cattle were walked up gently sloping ramps to give the meat (and the animals) the least stress possible. The Escher-like ramps, bridges and spiral staircases survive intact, though it is now a hipster mall.
