Colonial-era waterfront promenade facing Pudong skyline

Shanghai's most famous mile: a curve of grand colonial-era banks, trading houses and hotels along the west bank of the Huangpu river. Built mostly between 1900 and 1930, when Shanghai was the financial capital of Asia, the buildings look across the water at the floodlit towers of Pudong. The promenade is best at dusk, when both sides light up at once. Walk from the old British Consulate at the north end down past the HSBC Building (1923), the Customs House with its clock, and the Peace Hotel.

A story
The bronze lions guarding the old HSBC Building are replicas — the originals, cast in Shanghai in 1923, were carted off by the Japanese during the war and only later returned to display in the Shanghai Museum. Locals still rub their paws for luck.
