A museum dedicated to Shanghai's urban planning and development, containing the most complete and detailed scale model of any city in the world — a 1:500 scale model of central Shanghai on the fourth floor that occupies a large floor plate and is periodically updated to reflect new construction. Walking around the edge of the model gives a spatial comprehension of the city's structure that no map provides.
The other floors document the history of Shanghai's planning from the 1940s through the present, with models of proposed future development that provide insight into the city's trajectory. Less interesting for general visitors but invaluable for anyone interested in urban planning, architecture, or what Shanghai will look like in 2035. Admission charged; closed Mondays. People's Square.
