Rockbund Art Museum

Contemporary art museum in a restored 1932 Art Deco building on Huqiu Road

A contemporary art museum in a restored 1932 Art Deco building on Huqiu Road, in the Rockbund development north of the main Bund stretch. The museum is the most serious contemporary art venue on the waterfront — programme is international and consistently well-curated, focusing on large-scale installation and video work.

The Rockbund development around it, a cluster of restored 1920s–30s buildings, is one of the more thoughtful adaptive reuse projects in central Shanghai. The museum occupies the former Royal Asiatic Society building; the facade and much of the interior have been preserved. Admission charged; closed Mondays. Huqiu Road off Wuchang Road.
