An underground cable car tunnel beneath the Huangpu River connecting the Bund waterfront to Lujiazui, the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel delivers passengers across the river in a capsule surrounded by a light-and-sound show that is simultaneously kitsch, retro, and oddly appealing. The crossing takes three minutes; the laser and projector effects inside the tunnel are a direct product of 1990s Shanghai tourist infrastructure thinking.
The tunnel is a useful way to cross the river if the ferry is unavailable, and the capsule experience — while not comparable to anything elsewhere in Shanghai — is genuinely unlike anything else. It is also a rare piece of Shanghai tourist infrastructure that has survived unchanged from the 1990s. Worth trying once.
