Fuxing Road French Concession

Eastern stretch of Fuxing Road between Ruijin Road and Sinan Road lined with plane trees and villas

The east section of Fuxing Road between Ruijin Road and Sinan Road runs through the heart of the French Concession's most intact pre-war residential district. The road is tree-lined with mature plane trees, flanked by villa residences from the 1920s and 1930s, and retains the boulevard character of the original French urban design.

The contrast between this section and the commercial development further east on Fuxing Road is marked: here the buildings are primarily residential, the traffic is less intense, and the human scale of the pre-war concession is most legible. The Fuxing Park at the junction with Ruijin Road provides the best green space in the area. Early morning, when residents are using the park and the boulevard feels like a neighbourhood rather than a sight, is the best time.
