The North Bund, north of Suzhou Creek in Hongkou, is undergoing large-scale commercial development centred on the new finance and office towers of the North Bund Development Zone. The development is considerably less visited than the main Bund but offers elevated views of the colonial Bund waterfront from above, accessible from the rooftop bars and observation facilities in the new towers.
The North Bund Skywalk — a 1.2-kilometre elevated pedestrian promenade being developed above the riverbank — is intended to provide a continuous walking route from Suzhou Creek north. The neighbourhood is in active transition; the combination of the new towers and the surviving 1920s-era commercial buildings on Tanggu Road creates the kind of temporal layering that defines Shanghai.
