A neighbourhood commercial street in the western French Concession, Wulumuqi Road is named after the Xinjiang capital and has the character of a local street that has developed independent restaurant and café culture without the tourist overlay of the main French Concession attractions. The blocks between Huaihai Road and Fuxing Road have the most activity.
The cafés and independent restaurants here tend to be cheaper and less formal than equivalents in the Xintiandi or Tianzifang area. The neighbourhood surrounding this section of the French Concession — residential, with well-maintained lane houses — gives the street a different character from the boulevard sections further east. Worth exploring as an alternative to the more visited streets.
