Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition

Vast scale model showing the entire city as it was, is, and will be

A surprisingly absorbing six-floor museum dedicated to the city itself: its past, present, and 2035 master plan. The centrepiece on the third floor is one of the largest scale models in the world — the whole of central Shanghai, every building over six storeys, picked out under spotlights, with future buildings rendered in transparent acrylic.

The upper floors run through Shanghai's planning history with photographs and films of vanished neighbourhoods, the transformation of the Bund, and the building of Pudong. A startling thing to come and see if you want to understand how this city has happened. On the north-east corner of People's Square.

A story
The centrepiece is a 600-square-metre scale model of central Shanghai, kept updated as buildings rise. The buildings under construction are sometimes represented as transparent — you can see what is going to be there before the cranes have even arrived.
