Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park

Technology and pharmaceutical research district 30 kilometres southeast of central Pudong

The technology and pharmaceutical research district of Pudong, approximately 30 minutes by metro from central Shanghai, is where China's semiconductor industry, biotech research, and major tech companies have concentrated since the 1990s. The district is not a visitor attraction in the conventional sense, but for those interested in China's technological development, it provides a direct experience of what urban science parks look like in practice.

The Shanghai Astronomy Museum opened in 2021 in Lingang, an extension of the Zhangjiang area, and is the largest astronomy museum in the world — worth the trip for anyone with the interest. The FAST radio telescope (in Guizhou) is not accessible, but the Shanghai museum provides the context for understanding China's astronomy programme. Metro Line 2 to Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park.
