Columbia Circle (Former Columbia Country Club)

Restored 1920s Columbia Country Club complex in Xujiahui, now restaurants and a hotel

A restored 1920s country club complex in the Xujiahui district, southwest of Tianzifang, the former Columbia Country Club has been converted into a mixed retail and cultural complex maintaining the original Californian Spanish colonial architecture. The main clubhouse, tennis courts, and outdoor pool area are preserved; the interior houses boutiques and restaurants.

The complex is architecturally unusual for Shanghai: low-rise, garden-oriented, with a horizontal scale entirely different from the vertical development surrounding it. The ANNEX museum within the complex shows art exhibitions in the former club rooms. Columbia Circle is within the former French Concession area and provides a specific contrast to the lane house residential fabric of the surrounding neighbourhood.
