The Bund Promenade

Riverside promenade along the Huangpu facing the 52 colonial buildings of the Bund

The riverside promenade along the west bank of the Huangpu River — the Bund proper — runs for about a mile between Suzhou Creek to the north and the Old French Concession to the south. The view across the water to the Pudong skyline is the most photographed in Shanghai and is best at night when both banks are illuminated.

The best times are early morning (when locals use it for tai chi and exercise before work) and after dark (when the colonial buildings on the west side are lit and the Pudong towers on the east reflect in the river). The midday tourist peak can be avoided by visiting on a weekday morning. The Bund is fully pedestrianised along the riverside; vehicle traffic uses Zhongshan East 1st Road behind the colonial buildings.
