Kerem HaTeimanim

Kerem HaTeimanim — the Yemenite Vineyard — is the small Yemenite-Jewish neighbourhood between Carmel Market and the southern beaches. The streets are narrow and the houses low; the food is some of the most distinctive in the city.

The neighbourhood is the spiritual home of Israeli-Yemenite cooking — malawach (a flaky pan-fried bread), jachnun (a slow-baked yeast bread), lahuh (a yeasted pancake), and zhug (a hot green chilli paste). A handful of small restaurants are worth seeking out for any of these. Best for a leisurely Friday lunch.
