Ilana Goor Museum

The Ilana Goor Museum is one of the most personal art museums in Israel — a converted Ottoman caravanserai stuffed floor-to-ceiling with the artist's own work alongside her collected work by Picasso, Bacon, Henry Moore, Israeli moderns, and tribal art from West Africa to Papua. The arrangement is closer to a cabinet of curiosities than a contemporary museum.

The rooftop terrace is the bonus: full panoramic view over old Jaffa, the Mediterranean, and the Tel Aviv skyline. Open most days except Saturday morning; small entry fee.

A story
The museum is a working artist's house. Ilana Goor — sculptor, designer, the most prominent member of one of the great Israeli arts families — bought a 300-year-old Ottoman inn at the edge of old Jaffa in the 1980s, converted the upper floors into her home, and opened the rest as a museum. She still lives upstairs and occasionally appears in the galleries below.
