Jaffa Flea Market

The Jaffa Flea Market spreads out from Olei Tzion Street just east of the old city, with several blocks of alleys piled with antiques, vintage clothing, Persian rugs, brass lamps, and the kind of inherited furniture that fills every Israeli grandmother's apartment. The mood is loud, crowded, and unmistakably Levantine.

The market is at its peak on Friday mornings — by lunchtime everything starts to close for Shabbat — and a more relaxed shopping experience midweek. Bring cash for the older stalls and bargain politely. The bars and restaurants between the stalls have made this one of the city's best evening dining areas.

A story
The flea market — Shuk HaPishpishim — has been operating in its current location since the Ottoman period and was historically the rag-and-bone end of the Jaffa economy. In the last fifteen years the neighbourhood around it has become one of the most coveted in Tel Aviv, with galleries, design shops and bars taking over the alleys among the antique stalls.
