Suspended Orange Tree

The Suspended Orange Tree hangs about three metres above a narrow stone alley in the old quarter, easy to miss if you are not looking for it. Walk west from Kedumim Square along the alleys near the artists' studios and the tree will be over your head. Free.

It is small and slightly strange in the way the best small public art is, and worth the five minutes' detour from the standard old Jaffa walk.

A story
The artist Ran Morin planted an orange tree in a steel pod the size of a small car and suspended it on cables above an alley in Old Jaffa. The work — installed in 1993 — has been growing in mid-air for three decades, with a drip irrigation system feeding into the pod and a sleeve of plant matter draping down the steel skin. It is a single, quiet, weird thing tucked into the medieval stone of Jaffa.
