Hostages Square

Hostages Square is the formal plaza between the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Beit Ariela library, used since late 2023 as the centre of the public campaign by the families of Israeli hostages held in Gaza. A series of installations — a long Shabbat table set with empty plates, a model of an underground tunnel, ribbon walls of yellow ribbons — fills the space.

The square is mostly quiet during the day, with a public gathering on Saturday evenings. Whatever your politics, it is a deeply moving public space and an unmistakable mark of the city in this period.

A story
The square in front of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art was given the unofficial name Kikar HaChatufim — Hostages Square — after October 2023, when families of Israelis taken hostage by Hamas began an open-ended vigil here. The square has since hosted a permanent set of installations, posters, and gatherings around the hostage families' campaign.
