Ramses II Gate

In the small park at the top of the Old Jaffa hill stands one of the most surprising single artefacts in Tel Aviv: a reconstructed gateway from the Egyptian fortress of Jaffa, dating from the reign of Ramses II in the thirteenth century BC. The stones of the gateposts carry the original royal inscriptions — among the oldest written records of Jaffa anywhere.

A short walk away, the same park holds the remains of the Persian-Hellenistic city walls and a small ethnographic museum in a restored Ottoman house. The hill itself gives the best panoramic view in Tel Aviv.
