Old Jaffa

Old Jaffa is the historic core of the city: a small medieval Arab port wrapped around a low hill at the southern end of the Tel Aviv beachfront. The Ottoman-era streets — narrow, stone-paved, often arched — run between artists' studios, galleries, restaurants, and the occasional house museum.

The standard walk takes in Kedumim Square, St Peter's Church, the small Ramses gate-museum, and the panoramic terrace overlooking the Tel Aviv coastline to the north. Add the flea market for an extra hour, particularly on a Friday morning. Reach Old Jaffa from central Tel Aviv on foot along the beach in about thirty minutes or by city bus.

A story
Jaffa appears in Egyptian records 3,500 years ago and is among the oldest continuously inhabited port cities in the world. Jonah sailed from here; Saint Peter is said to have raised Tabitha from the dead in a house here; Napoleon stormed and looted the place in 1799. The Jewish settlement that became Tel Aviv was founded in 1909 as a Hebrew alternative to Arab Jaffa, just up the beach.
