Neve Tzedek

Neve Tzedek is the small, low-rise neighbourhood just east of the Tel Aviv beach, immediately north of Jaffa. It is the oldest Jewish neighbourhood in the city and is now its most picturesque — narrow streets, restored late-nineteenth-century houses, and a high concentration of boutique shops, galleries, and cafés.

The Suzanne Dellal Centre, the city's main contemporary dance venue, is at the heart of the neighbourhood. The HaTachana — the old Jaffa railway station — sits on the southern edge, restored as a small shopping and dining complex. Allow at least an hour to wander; longer if you plan to eat or drink.

A story
Neve Tzedek was the first Jewish neighbourhood built outside the old walls of Jaffa, founded in 1887 — twenty-two years before Tel Aviv itself. The original Jewish-Yemenite houses, with their narrow streets and Mediterranean stuccoed walls, fell into decay through the twentieth century and have been carefully restored as one of the most coveted residential neighbourhoods in the country.
