Rabin Square

Rabin Square — Kikar Rabin — is the largest open square in central Tel Aviv, the standard venue for political rallies, public gatherings, and seasonal markets. The Tel Aviv City Hall sits on the eastern side, with a low concrete amphitheatre stepping down from it to the square.

The Rabin assassination memorial — sixteen dark basalt boulders marking the spot where the prime minister was shot — sits on the eastern edge of the square at the foot of the City Hall steps. The square is unmissable when walking the central streets and worth a quiet pause.

A story
On 4 November 1995, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by a far-right Israeli activist on the steps of the City Hall, a few moments after addressing a peace rally of more than a hundred thousand people in this square. The square was renamed for him within weeks and a small memorial of dark basalt stones is set into the pavement at the exact spot.
