Dizengoff Square

Dizengoff Square is the architectural centrepiece of the White City — a perfect circular Bauhaus composition of curved buildings ringing a central plaza, named for Zina Dizengoff, wife of Tel Aviv's first mayor.

In the centre is the Fire and Water Fountain by the Israeli kinetic artist Yaacov Agam, an enormous coloured ring that rotates and shoots water and (once an hour during the day) fire. The square is now the standard meeting point in the centre of the city. Free.

A story
The square was designed in 1934 by the architect Genia Averbuch in a strict Bauhaus geometry, with curved buildings of identical height ringing a central circular space. In 1978 it was lifted twenty metres above ground level on a raised concrete platform to separate pedestrians from car traffic; in 2018 it was returned to ground level after decades of campaigning to restore the original design.
