Sarona Market

Sarona Market is a covered indoor food hall in the restored Templer neighbourhood east of central Tel Aviv. The hall has around ninety stalls and shops covering both produce and prepared food, with a heavy emphasis on Israeli specialty foods — olive oil, halva, cheese, chocolate, wine. The seating areas double as a food court.

The wider Sarona district is the more interesting bit: thirty-seven preserved German Templer farmhouses now reused as restaurants, design shops, and offices, set in a small wooded park. The combination makes for a relaxed half-day, especially in the evening.

A story
The Sarona neighbourhood was founded in 1871 by German Templer Christians as an agricultural colony on the road from Jaffa to Jerusalem. The British interned the population during the Second World War and the buildings became the Israeli army's first headquarters after independence. In the 2010s the entire complex was lifted, moved, and restored as a high-end shopping and food district.
