Adashino Nenbutsu-ji is one of the quieter temples in the hills north of Arashiyama. Its grounds hold thousands of small stone Buddhist figures, gathered to remember the unknown and forgotten dead once buried in this old cremation ground.
The mood is more reflective than grand. Come while walking the back lanes of Sagano, especially if you are continuing toward Otagi Nenbutsu-ji, and give yourself time to notice the moss, bamboo, and rows of weathered stones.
